As students return to Eastern Michigan University, they may notice some of the safety enhancements the school has put in place. Other enhancements won't be so obvious.
EMU spokesperson Geoff Larcom says one of the more visible items is improved lighting in the campus perimeter area.
"There's been additional lighting in the Westview apartment complex, that's located over by the athletic facilities," Larcom says, "but in addition, more lighting on Oakwood Street on the western end of campus, on Huron River Drive, along the northern end of campus."
Lighting has also been improved in the Clark Rd. and Leforge Rd. areas.
Not as obvious - the hiring of additional police officers, which will bring the campus police force up to it's highest level ever: 43.
Active shooter training has also been going on behind the scenes.
First day of classes for EMU students is September 3rd.
