Federal Grant To Help Ann Arbor Township Firefighters Breathe Cleaner Air

Fire Fighters in Ann Arbor Township will soon have cleaner air to breathe at the community's two fire stations.

Ann Arbor Township's fire stations will be getting new systems to keep the air cleaner.  A nearly $90,000  Federal Emergency Management Agency grant is paying for the new equipment.

Fire Chief Brian Thurston says the air quality concerns are centered around fire trucks, particularly when they first start to go on a run, and when they return to the fire station.  According to Thurston the exhaust pipe on the trucks are only several inches long compared to what cars have, so there's a big difference in the amount of exhaust put into the building.

Concerns about diesel emission are growing and it's been a high priority for the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Like many, I first came to this area when I started school at the University of Michigan, then fell in love with the community and haven’t left. After graduating from U of M in the mid 1990’s I interned at WDET for several years, while also working a variety of jobs in Ann Arbor. Then in 1999 I joined the WEMU news team.
