Former Manufacturing Center in Ypsilanti Township Gets Push Forward As Next-Gen Testing Facility

Ann Arbor SPARK

The former Willow Run Powertrain Plant in Ypsilanti Township will soon be the site of a new autonomous vehicle testing facility. The project took a step forward Friday with the creation of a non-profit to manage the site.

The American Center for Mobility is joint initiative by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation and other state and private companies. John Maddox will lead the project, he’s served as the Assistant Director of MCity, a vehicle research facility in Ann Arbor.

“The plan is to re-purpose the entire Willow Run site to a modern state-of-the-art...facility for cars that talk to one another and cars that can even drive themselves.”, Maddox says.

Tuesday The Michigan Strategic Fund will decide whether to offer $3 million in state funding for the project.
