The four Republicans running for governor last night all met for the first time on a debate stage. The candidates sparred on Flint, marijuana, and President Trump.
The candidates jockeyed to show who is the biggest supporter of President Trump, who has endorsed state Attorney General Bill Schuette. Schuette also defended his prosecution of state officials over the Flint water crisis as not political.
When the question of marijuana was raised, Schuette joined the other candidates in opposing the legalization question that appears headed to the November ballot.
“But I think citizens of the state will have a chance to vote, and democracy will prevail.”
Lieutenant Governor Brian Calley was the only candidate to express support for medical marijuana, although he also opposes full legalization by the state.
