Eastern Michigan University is being recognized for its continuing efforts to prevent suicide and promote mental health.

The recognition comes in the form of a federal grant.

EMU is getting a three year, $300-thousand grant from the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration

Ellen Gold is EMU's Assistant Vice President of Student Well-Being.

She says they want students who need help to feel comfortable asking for it.

"Our goal is to reduce the stigma for those students that feel they can't seek help and support," Gold says. " We want students, faculty and staff to better be able to recognize and respond to students experiencing mental health distress."

Gold says this money will help consolidate and unify EMU's various programs and ensure students get the help they need.
