With Heartbreak, Conan Smith Withdraws From Washtenaw County Job

Metro Matters

After resigning from the Washtenaw County Board of Commissionersto apply for a full time job with the county, Conan Smith has now withdrawn from consideration for that position as well.

Smith stepped down from the county commission in hopes of becoming the director of the Office of Community and Economic Development for Washtenaw County.

The move raised ethical questions by some people in the community, who complained the entire matter was taking up too much of the Board's time, which could have been spent working on other county concerns.

County commissioner Dan Smith says they did spend some time at meetings dealing with Smith's replacement and also spent some time debating a resolution about filling the OCED position as well.

"It has in that regard been a distraction.  I don't know if it's really impacted the county administrator search per se, but it certainly has been a distraction," Smith says.

On Saturday, the commission will be interviewing the four finalists from the county administrator's job.  Then, commissioners will spend the next several days coming up with the final selection, which is expected to be announced at their next board meeting, Wednesday, October 19th.
