Interest in Ann Arbor Skatepark Growing

It's still a little over two months before the opening day for the new skatepark in Ann Arbor, but interest in skating already seems to be growing.  The skatepark's grand opening is set for June 21st, which is International Go Skating Day.

Jason Shepard is the manager of Ann Arbor's Red Belly Boardshop on Plymouth.  According to Shepard the early feedback on how the skatepark is developing is positive.

Shepard says in the last few months they have sold skateboards and gear to people from four years old to parents in their 40's.  He encourages anyone thinking of skating to get a helmet first and foremost, but also elbow, wrist, and knee pads, especially when starting to learn how to skate.

He believes the skatepark will boost sales at stores like his, as well as all the businesses near Veteran's Memorial Park once the skatepark is open.  That's because skateboaders from across south-east Michigan are likely going to come to try out the new facility.

Like many, I first came to this area when I started school at the University of Michigan, then fell in love with the community and haven’t left. After graduating from U of M in the mid 1990’s I interned at WDET for several years, while also working a variety of jobs in Ann Arbor. Then in 1999 I joined the WEMU news team.
