Nearly Four Dozen Children In Washtenaw County Tested Positive For High Blood Lead Levels In 2015

Preliminary datashows Washtenaw County is below the statewide average for children who tested positive for elevated blood lead levels.

Roughly 2,900 children in Washtenaw County were tested by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services for lead last year.

"Of those, 45 has an elevated blood lead level," says MDHHS spokesperson Jennifer Eisner.  "That’s about 1.5 percent, which is below the state average.”

Eisner says parents need to be especially careful in the summer to avoid exposing kids to lead.  “Maintaining your home...wiping counters down and wiping windows.  Especially in the summer, that’s when a lot of dirt can come into the home," she advises.

Statewide, 4,790 children tested positive for elevated blood lead levels in 2015.
