Don’t bother bringing the skies or snow shovel out of the garage yet. Unseasonably warm weather will continue for at least the next few weeks in Southeast Michigan.
Temperatures in Washtenaw County are 20 degrees higher than average for December. Eastern Michigan University’s Tom Kovacks says the cause is this year's El Nino, one of the three strongest in recorded history. He says we’re at the peak of its' effects right now.
Kovacks says,
“Even during El Nino you can have periods of return to warmer winter weather, kind of like in November when we had a snowstorm, but on average we should be warmer throughout the winter.”
He says a snowy Christmas isn’t likely this year because higher than normal temperatures will continue through January.
