Phase two of the reconstruction of the I-275 freeway gets underway later this morning.

The project is now halfway done, with the reopening of the recently refurbished southbound side of I-275 from I-96 to M-14.  Following the morning drive, the plan is to shut down the north side of that freeway in the same area.

Michigan Department of Transportation spokeswoman Diane Cross says the dry weather has helped put them ahead of schedule so far because lack of rain helps the concrete curefaster.

"So weather is very often an issue, and the drier weather has helped with that concrete."

Cross says it takes about two weeks for the 100,000 motorists who travel that stretch of freeway to get used to a new route during construction.

She says the contractor has until mid-September to finish the northbound I-275 side.  There is a financial incentive for every day they get done early.
