The Ann Arbor News and Detroit Free Press report Wednesday that 21-year-old Drew Sterrett filed lawsuits last month in Washtenaw County and federal court in Detroit.

It alleges the Ann Arbor school committed violations while investigating a sexual encounter between him and another student in March 2012 in a residence hall.

Sterrett says the encounter was consensual and the woman didn't report it until July of that year. He hasn't been charged with any crimes.

University officials say in a statement they are reviewing the lawsuits and plan "to defend them vigorously."

The school is among 55 colleges and universities facing federal investigation for their handling of sexual abuse allegations. SEE ALSO: Discrimination Suit Filed Against University Of Michigan Regents
