Transit Millage Opponents Say Defeating Ballot Issue First Step Towards More Efficient Transit

Members of Better Transit Now say defeating next week’s transit millage is the first step towards improving Ann Arbor Area Transportation Authority Service.

Former AATA board member Ted Annis believes it will take time and likely require Ann Arbor City Council changing the make-up of the authority’s board.  Annis thinks a drive for more efficient service likely will require a shake-up at the AAATA.

Annis and other members of Better Transit Now say they favor the proposed service expansion, but don’t believe additional funding is needed.  They point to the University of Michigan bus system as much more efficient and an option to be followed.

AAATA CEO Michael Ford counters that community and business leaders have rejected the claims of Better Transit Now as false and misleading.

AAATA CEO Michael Ford responds to claims the authority could offer the proposed expanded services if they were simply more efficient.

Ford says the key question is simply if the community wants more public transportation service.

Like many, I first came to this area when I started school at the University of Michigan, then fell in love with the community and haven’t left. After graduating from U of M in the mid 1990’s I interned at WDET for several years, while also working a variety of jobs in Ann Arbor. Then in 1999 I joined the WEMU news team.
