Volunteers Cheer On Ypsilanti Students And Teachers On The First Day Of Classes

Sep 8, 2015

Around 100 volunteers showed up this morning at eight Ypsilanti Community Schools to cheer students on as the new school year began.

Volunteers handed out high-fives, t-shirts, and gave rounds of applause to students and teachers who arrived for the first day of class.

Mayor Amanda Edmonds was with a team of volunteers at Ypsilanti Community Middle School. She said many teachers told her it meant a lot to them to have the community cheering them on.

“Every year is a chance to get better and better.", Edmonds said. "Setting high standards and expectations and saying, "we’re here to help you meet those." We're just trying to put some good energy and community support behind that [idea].”

Edmonds adds, hopes more Ypsi residents join this year's volunteers to welcome kids back to school when classes begin again in September 2016.
