Washtenaw Photo ID Card Program Preparing To Launch

The aim is accessibility and community integration for those who may find themselves on the outside looking in. The new Washtenaw Photo ID Card program is getting set to launch in a few months. Listen below to the conversation with one of the driving forces behind the program. 

Important Notes:

1. The Washtenaw County ID does not permit you to drive a vehicle.
2. The Washtenaw County ID is only to be used to prove who you are and where you live.
3. You will need to provide one identity credential that has your date of birth and your photograph on it OR fingerprints.

WASHTENAW COUNTY ID PROGRAM

  • Where will we go to get the ID?
    • Washtenaw County Clerk’s Office/Register of Deeds

  • When is it going to be available?
    • Mid-April 2015
  • What are the hours that it is open?
  • The County ID Program will be open 20 hours a week (days and times will be determined)
  • No. Applicants will be processed on a walk-in basis.
  • See POTENTIAL eligibility criteria. These documents have not been concretely decided on by the Office of the County Clerk (OCC). These are documents that you may want to look for prior to the program rolling out. If they are indeed documents that will be accepted by the OCC and they are in another language, you will need to get them translated by a licensed professional.

  • Do I need to set up an appointment to get my ID card?
  • What kinds of documents are accepted?
  • If a document needs to be translated into English, does it also need to be notarized?

Anyone who has lived in Washtenaw County for 15 of the last 30 days and can provide documentation of identity and residency with at least one photograph or fingerprints AND proof of birthdate (See: Eligibility Criteria)

  • Can children apply for the ID?
    • Yes. There will be a simplified eligibility criteria for them.

DETAILS ABOUT THE CARD:

  • What will be on the card?
    • To be determined by the Office of the County Clerk but will likely include:
      • Name
      • Unique Identification Number
      • Date of Birth
      • Address
      • Issue and Expiration Date
      • Washtenaw County Seal
      • Height, Weight, Eye Color
  • How much will the card cost?
  • $25
  • 3 years; to renew your ID card, you will need to pay again
  • No. It will not be accepted by the Federal Government and it may be accepted but not necessarily by the State of Michigan.
  • This will vary in terms of local businesses but right now we know it can be used for:
    • Amtrack
    • Hotels
    • Medical appointments
    • To fill prescriptions at pharmacies
    • To show identity and residency to law enforcement
    • To fill out a federal form (I-9) for employment
    • Bank of Ann Arbor will cash checks with it
    • Showing ID with credit card purchases
    • Access to county services
    • Libraries
    • Housing contracts and leases
    • Getting documents notarized
    • To purchase cigarettes and alcohol
    • Sending and receiving packages via Fedex and Post Office
