Water Resources Commission Earns Certified Wildlife Habitat Designation

Commission's goal is to get more properties in the area certified.

Developments across Washtenaw County have reduced wildlife habitat, over the last several decades. The Water Resources Commission office is among a growing number of locations designed to support a variety of organisms.

Native plants, bird feeders, and a heated water supply earned the office a certified wildlife habitat designation. The National Wildlife Federation has give the recognition to over 200 homes in the county, and is look for more. Water Resources Commissioner, Evan Pratt, say the goal is to get multiple properties in a specific area certified. Pratt stated while separate acreage is okay, "the more connective things are, that's really where it makes a difference."

Pratt says more natural areas means better water quality for all.

Like many, I first came to this area when I started school at the University of Michigan, then fell in love with the community and haven’t left. After graduating from U of M in the mid 1990’s I interned at WDET for several years, while also working a variety of jobs in Ann Arbor. Then in 1999 I joined the WEMU news team.
