Whitmore Lake Schools Officials Continue To Seek Annexation Partner

Dec 12, 2014

Whitmore Lake considers Dexter Community as a new annexation partner.

As declines in enrollment and revenue continue to plague the Whitmore Lake schools, district officials are exploring a potential relationship with Dexter Community Schools.

The annexation between Whitmore Lake and Ann Arbor Public Schools was scuttled at the polls by the issue of a tax increase for Ann Arbor district residents. However, if Dexter and Whitmore Lake were to join together, taxes wouldn't change in either community.

Chris Timmis is the Superintendent of Dexter Community Schools and his opinion is "it's our board's responsibility to weigh options to see whether this is something that we should pursue or not, knowing where current education trends are." That being said, Timmis feels that all plans that could help students must be considered. Incoming Whitmore Lake Superintendent, Tom DeKeyser, says the downside lies in the millions of dollars from the state no longer being in play.

There is no timeline for a decision, as discussion and due diligence continue.
