A competition challenging hundreds of students on their basic math skills is taking place today on the Eastern Michigan University campus.
500 students from 19 charter schools in Michigan are competing today without calculators in the third annual "Math Facts Challenge" on the EMU campus.
Dr. Malverne Winborne, the director of the charter schools office at Eastern, says the competition keeps first thru eighth graders excited about math.
"Continue to spark that interest in mathematics, which is very important in this nation in terms of our students' math scores. So, this really incentivizes kids to focus on their math."
The number of participants has more than doubled since the competition began 3 years ago. Dr. Winborne says they will probably have more girls competing this year than boys.
