Ypsilanti City Council To Consider Smoking Ban In Tot Lot Parks

Sep 17, 2014

Ypsilanti City Council will soon consider the issue of smoking in some city parks.  The city's Parks and Recreation Commission is recommending that the city's three "tot lot" parks be declared smoke-free.

Bob Krzewinski serves on the commission.  He's hopeful council will sign off on the idea.

"We earlier this year talked with several city council members, and there were some feelings that a total ban in all parks at the present time in the city of Ypsilanti would not be supported," Krzewinski says, "but nobody seemed to have any objections to protecting children at the three small, little tot lots as we call them around the city."

Once the smoking ban in the Charles Street, Edith Hefley and Carrie Mattingly parks is approved, Krzewinski hopes it'll be a self-policing policy.

City Council is expected to consider the ban at its October 7  meeting.
