Ypsilanti City Council is set to approve a new budget next week.

The city’s projected budget for the next fiscal year will top out at  just over $14 million. That amounts to a 16-percent reduction in current year spending.  Ypsilanti City Manager Ralph Lange says the city is ending the year on a high note.

"Instead of having a $5.4 million dollar fund balance at the end of this [fiscal] year June 30. I expect that we’ll have more than that."

Lange says the budget for the fiscal year that starts July 1st is highly dependent on voter passage of a 2.3 mill tax to help pay down Water Street debt. He says if the August 2nd ballot issue fails, the city may be forced to make significant cuts, including laying off employees.
