Art and Soul with Lisa Barry

Second Thursdays 4:35pm every month

Art and Soul is a new feature on 89.1 WEMU that will focus on our vibrant visual arts community. 

Lisa Barry, host of WEMU's All Things Considered, will work with Omari Rush from the Ann Arbor Art Center to bring you stories about the art and artists that you can see, feel, touch and experience right in your own neighborhood.  Each segment will feature an in depth look at a particular event, installation, artist, etc. along with news and tidbits about what's happening in art around town.  In addition to regular airings on WEMU, Art and Soul will also be a regular web feature with dynamic content with pictures and videos that will help bring the art to life.

This week, I talk with Dr. Scott Sonenshein, a member of the University of Michigan Ross School of Business Center for Positive Organization’s Research Advisory Board and currently a professor at Rice University about the concept of "stretching" when it comes to our minds and how we can create more satisfying lives by being happy with what we already have versus always trying to get more.

We discuss the visual arts activities going on right now in the Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti areas.

This week on Art & Soul, I’m joined by food and dining reporter, and host of The In Crowd, Jessica Webster, to talk about what is going on in the culinary scene of Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti.

We discuss how Ann Arbor’s Main Street Café Felix and the iconic Blind Pig music venue are both up for sale.  The Jefferson Market will be under new management soon, as it has been bought by the owners of Mighty Good Coffee.

Michigan Collaborative for Mindfulness in Education

This week on Art and Soul, I talk to Kristen Ervin and Dr. Rita Benn of the Michigan Collaborative of Mindfullness In Education organization, better known as MC4ME.

We discuss the meaning behind mindfulness and how it can help young students, as well as adults.

There were fewer changes and some interesting trends, according to Webster.  She says there have been a lot of new pizza places opening in the Ann Arbor area recently.

The 40th Annual Ann Arbor Folk Festival is the last weekend in January, Friday, January 27th and Saturday, January 28th.


University of Michigan

This week on Art and Soul, I am joined by University of Michigan professor Dr. Robert Pasick, who holds a PhD in psychology from Harvard University.

Dr. Pasick has written six books with the latest one on self awareness.  It's called "Self Aware-A Guide for Success in Work and Life."

He talks about how well do we know ourselves, how well do we know other people, and how do we manage ourselves and our relationships, including intimacy and one-on-one relationships.

I am joined by Omari Rush, the director of Community Engagement at the Ann Arbor Art Center, and Cara Rosaen, lead organizer of the newly created Winter Art Tour happening this weekend in Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti.

Rosaen explains why the art tour was created and how it incorporates a number of different art shows and sales happening locally this weekend into one big event.

The business value of joy.

Richard Sheridan is the owner of Menlo Innovations in Ann Arbor and the author of a book called "Joy, Inc." He started working as a computer programmer before he could even drive a car back in the early '70s.  He got a couple of degrees in computer science and computer engineering at the University of Michigan and settled in the area which he says is a great area to run a software business.

He talks about what lead him to write the book "Joy, Inc."  He also talks about what it takes to build an intentionally joyful culture and taking a different approach to running a business that gives employees satisfaction.

Ji Hye Kim plans to open a Zingerman's-backed Korean restaurant in Ann Arbor's Kerrytown by late fall.

She joined Jessica Webster and me to talk about what lead her to create the restaurant and how it will involve her culture and family and travels around the world in offering the freshest ingredients and unique Korean dining.
