Art and Soul with Lisa Barry

Second Thursdays 4:35pm every month

Art and Soul is a new feature on 89.1 WEMU that will focus on our vibrant visual arts community. 

Lisa Barry, host of WEMU's All Things Considered, will work with Omari Rush from the Ann Arbor Art Center to bring you stories about the art and artists that you can see, feel, touch and experience right in your own neighborhood.  Each segment will feature an in depth look at a particular event, installation, artist, etc. along with news and tidbits about what's happening in art around town.  In addition to regular airings on WEMU, Art and Soul will also be a regular web feature with dynamic content with pictures and videos that will help bring the art to life.

This week on Art and Soul, local journalist and blogger Jenn McKee joins me to talk about many of the upcoming shows and events in our area.  Director Joe York from PTD Productions in Ypsilanti also joins the conversation to talk about the theater company's upcoming production of "Noises Off."

The business value of joy.

Richard Sheridan is the owner of Menlo Innovations in Ann Arbor and the author of a book called "Joy, Inc." He started working as a computer programmer before he could even drive a car back in the early '70s.  He got a couple of degrees in computer science and computer engineering at the University of Michigan and settled in the area which he says is a great area to run a software business.

He talks about what lead him to write the book "Joy, Inc."  He also talks about what it takes to build an intentionally joyful culture and taking a different approach to running a business that gives employees satisfaction.

There is a new event called "YpsiGLOW," taking place in Ypsilanti later this month.

Ji Hye Kim plans to open a Zingerman's-backed Korean restaurant in Ann Arbor's Kerrytown by late fall.

She joined Jessica Webster and me to talk about what lead her to create the restaurant and how it will involve her culture and family and travels around the world in offering the freshest ingredients and unique Korean dining.

On this week's Art & Soul: The Performing Arts, journalist and local blogger Jenn McKee and I talk with Matthew Brennan, the director and choreographer of the Encore Theatre's musical adaptation of the 1997 British film "The Full Monty" in Dexter.

John Barfield came from humble beginnings earning less than $2 an hour as a janitor at the University of Michigan.  Today, he is a successful businessman, author, and the focus of a PBS documentary.

We had a conversation about how everyone can be successful both personally and professionally and what's important in life.

In this edition of Art and Soul, I am joined by the director of community engagement for the Ann Arbor Art Center, Omari Rush, and special guest Lynette Lao, president of the board for the Fly Children's Art Center in Ypsilanti.

"Fly" is designing one of the special pavilions that will be part of Pop-X running September 22nd to October 1st in Ann Arbor's Liberty Plaza.

Statewide life and culture reporter for MLive and dining reporter Jessica Webster shares information on several spots for local discount Happy Hour drinks and food specials including Maiz in Ypsilanti.

Jessica also talks about "Autbar," which she says has a great outdoor courtyard and $5 craft cocktails during their happy hour.

On this week's Art & Soul, Lisa Barry and Jenn McKee are joined by the conductor of the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra, Arie Lipsky, and talk about the symphony's upcoming season which begins Saturday September 10th at Hill Auditorium.

The Symphony will begin its performance with the Shostakovich Festive Overture, which will include a rarely-heard optional brass ensemble played by area high school students from Huron, Pioneer, and Skyline.

This week on Art and Soul: The Art of Better Living, I speak with the co-founder of Zingerman's, and the publisher of several books, Ari Weinzweig.

He has a new book out titled "The Power of Beliefs in Business," but the lengthy book has information and insights that can be applied to everyone's everyday life as well.

Weinzweig says the way to create a self-fulfilling positive cycle in our lives starts with our beliefs.

For 40 years Bob Quinn has been interested in change - Positive change.

He's a professor at the University of Michigan's Ross School of Business, the author of 18 books and one of the co-founders of the University of Michigan's Center for Positive Organizations.

This edition of Art and Soul focuses on comics and animation with special guests Jerzy and Anne Drozd.

Jerzy Drozd creates comics and is known as the "pied piper of children" at the Ann Arbor Art Center. He describes himself as a "person who writes with pictures" and says the youth comics market is a growing field right now.

On this week's Art and Soul, I talk with Jessica Webster about some of the things happening in and around Ann Arbor this month.

Taste of Ann Arbor is this coming Saturday, June 4th. It's a chance to sample food from a number of different Ann Arbor restaurants.
