The New Year has arrived.  Among the changes for 2017 is an automatic pay raise for thousands of workers across Michigan.  The state's minimum wage has increased by 40 cents to $8.90 an hour.  There is a lot of conversation on the longer-term impacts of higher wages.

2016 has brought its share of challenges, not the least of which has been racial and ethnic tensions from the police shooting deaths of unarmed black men around the country, to the campaign rhetoric of the President-elect, to the white supremacist messages spray-painted on campus buildings at Eastern Michigan University.  The Washtenaw County Sheriff is hoping, by taking it head-on, this area will be a model for how to address these issues.

Bats have a positive impact on Michigan's ecosystem, but a terrible affliction known as "white-nose syndrome" is threatening their population.  In this week's "Issues of the Environment," WEMU's David Fair talks with  Dr. Allen Kurta, professor of biology at Eastern Michigan University, about the ecological impacts posed by a decimation in certain bat species.

Dr. Sadaf Ali took a group of Eastern Michigan University students to London.  The goal was to have them experience, first hand, how media organizations there approach journalism and social media.  They accomplished this by immersing themselves in the media rich environment of London.  Dr. Ali and her student, Valerie Hopkins, stopped by the WEMU studios to share their thoughts and memories of the trip.

Eastern Michigan University’s Board of Regents yesterday passed a budget for the fiscal year that begins July 1st. As part of the spending measure, the Regents approved a contract with food vendor Chartwells. The decision to privatize the school’s dining services did not come about without some criticism.
