As we walk around college campuses in Washtenaw County, most of us usually just pay attention to what we see above ground.  But, have you ever thought about what lies beneath?  89.1 WEMU’s Jorge Avellan wondered about that and, what he found underground at Eastern Michigan University is a series of steam tunnels.

Mary Terese Fleszar was last seen alive the evening of July 9, 1967.  Her body was found on an abandoned farm in Superior Township just about one month later.  Investigators didn’t know it then, but this was the beginning of a series of murders attributed to John Norman Collins.  These horrific acts of violence held our community in terror until Collins’ arrest in July 1969.  On this week’s "Hidden in Plain Sight," WEMU’s Patrick Campion meets up with “Terror in Ypsilanti” author Gregory Fournier to take us on a tour of some of the sites and sounds associated with the “Michigan Murderer” who preyed on Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti co-eds for two years.

On September 11th of each year, we are reminded of the horrific day when America found itself under attack. The Pentagon was hit. Another hijacked plane went down in a Pennsylvania field in a crash that spared a Washington D.C.  target because of the heroics of some of its passengers. And, for those old enough to remember, we will never forget where we were when word broke that one of the towers of New York’s World Trade Center had been hit by a plane. Then, the other tower was hit. Any question of whether it was a terrorist attack was removed. Then, we watched, and listened, in disbelief as each of those towers collapsed and crumbled to the ground, claiming 2,997 lives. From that day forward, as a nation, we made a promise: “We will never forget.”  Today marks 16-years since that fateful day. On this anniversary, 89.1 WEMU’s Jorge Avellan takes you to a spot on the Eastern Michigan University campus where a piece pulled from the wreckage of the World Trade Center sits, open to the public, and yet, “Hidden in Plain Sight.”

For those who watched the solar eclipse in our area it was a partial eclipse--still a sight to behold watching with NASA-approved solar glasses.  But for serious astronomers and those wanting a very rare solar experience... they traveled to a 70 mile swath of the country where the eclipse could be seen as a total eclipse.

89.1 WEMU'S Lisa Barry spoke to Eastern Michigan University professor of astronomy and director of Sherzer Observatory Norbert Vance, who traveled to Ravenna, Nebraska to see a total eclipse and shares his enthusiastic experience.

Did you get outside and watch Monday’s eclipse?  It was not considered a "total eclipse" in our area, so the environmental impact was not that noticeable.

89.1 WEMU's Lisa Barry spoke with Tom Kasper, the Planetarium coordinator and lecturer in Astronomy at Eastern Michigan University, who traveled to a small town outside Jay Em, Wyoming so he could see the total eclipse.
