Ypsilanti Historical Society Archives

Women have played an important part in Ypsilanti’s 200 year-old industrial heritage.  During the late 19th century and early 20th century, women were hard at work in mills throughout the region. They worked for low wages while often standing for long hours in silence.  We took a history tour to reveal how important women were in developing a future for the Ypsilanti area.

The New Year has arrived.  Among the changes for 2017 is an automatic pay raise for thousands of workers across Michigan.  The state's minimum wage has increased by 40 cents to $8.90 an hour.  There is a lot of conversation on the longer-term impacts of higher wages.

2016 has brought its share of challenges, not the least of which has been racial and ethnic tensions from the police shooting deaths of unarmed black men around the country, to the campaign rhetoric of the President-elect, to the white supremacist messages spray-painted on campus buildings at Eastern Michigan University.  The Washtenaw County Sheriff is hoping, by taking it head-on, this area will be a model for how to address these issues.
