General Motors says it will ask a federal bankruptcy judge to shield the company from legal claims involving conduct before its 2009 bankruptcy. The company revealed its strategy late Tuesday in a motion filed in a federal court case in Corpus Christi, Texas, surrounding defective ignition switches that have led GM to recall more than 2 million cars.
A person familiar with the event says that new General Motors chief executive Mary Barra is expected to speak at the University of Michigan's spring commencement in May. The person asked not to be identified Wednesday because the speaker hasn't been officially announced. Barra is the first woman to head a major U.S. automaker.
General Motors has announced it will be donating $900,000 over the next three years to Eastern Michigan Uuniversity's Project Lead the Way program - a national program that encourages U.S. middle and high schools to teach STEM, or science, technology, engineering and math curriculum materials, and the development of engineering and biomedical programs for their students.
Professor John Dugger is the director of EMU's Project Lead The Way affiliate program. He says the program continues to grow, and EMU has helped train many of its teachers.
Dugger says the program contributes in other ways; holding annual conferences and acting as a recruiter and advisor for schools interested in the teaching STEM material.
