Chelsea Takes Preemptive Truck Traffic Action

With the possibility of a mining operation coming to Lyndon Township, officials in Chelsea have taken steps to regulate heavy truck traffic rumbling through town along M-52.

The city has created an M-52 corridor that requires mining haulers and other big trucks to apply for a special permit to use the road. 

Chelsea special legal counsel Gerald Fisher says the restrictions also apply to over-sized vehicles carrying things like manufactured homes and wind turbine blades.

"That operation will be subject to application, review and approval by the city," Fisher says.

Lyndon Township Mine Delayed For Six Months

Lyndon Township's Planning Commission will take its time reviewing a proposed sand and gravel mine.  They have tabled for six months McCoig Materials special land use application for the site on M-52 across from Green Lake.

Jeff Daniels urges responsibility at Chelsea meeting

Signs along Main Street in Chelsea are urging Lyndon Township officials to reject the proposed sand and gravel operations. Up to 160 gravel haulers a day could pass these locations.

Lyndon Township’s planning commission isn’t expected to make a decision on a special land use permit for a sand and gravel mining operation until this summer.  About 30 people spoke out against the proposal as a public hearing wrapped up Thursday night.

Proposed Gravel Pit in Lyndon Township Subject of Meeting Monday Night

Many Lyndon Township residents are afraid a large gravel pit and mining operation will hurt the recreation areas that bring people to western Washtenaw County.  The Lyndon Township Planning Commission is holding a meeting Monday night to receive comments on a special land use permit for property on M-52 just south of North Territorial.
