Ann Arbor Police just wrapped up a special 5-month enforcement of pedestrian crosswalk safety in the city.

We're a day away from the November elections, and there are but hours left to access an absentee ballot.  WEMU's David Fair and Mary Morgan of the CivCity Initiative have the details about where you need to go today.  Additionally, they cover a number of civic engagement opportunities in this week's edition of "Civic Matters."

The City of Ann Arbor’s Climate Action Plan says walking reduces overall greenhouse gas emissions and traffic congestion, while improving our health.  But, walking can be risky.  According to the Centers for Disease Control, a pedestrian dies after being hit by a car every 1.6 hours in the United States.  Understandably, many people feel safer behind the wheel, than in front of it.  How can people get across the street safely?  There is considerable debate over best strategies.  In this installment of WEMU’s “Green Room” series, Barbara Lucas explores a tip that could be a complement to all.

More and more people are opting to cycle rather than drive for at least some of their transportation, whether for personal health, or for the health of the planet.  But safety is an issue, and emotions run high.  Conflicts occur over who has a right to the roadway. Should we encourage bicycles in the street, or should we try to separate bikes from cars?  In this installment of WEMU’s Green Room series, Barbara Lucas explores varying perspectives.

At least one Ann Arbor neighborhood may change the way snow and ice is removed from sidewalks next winter.  Ann Arbor businessman Paul Tinkerhess and others are working on the SnowBuddy concept to have a small tractor plow all of the sidewalks in the Water Hill neighborhood.

The Ann Arbor Police Department is just over one-third of the way through a six month effort to increase pedestrian and motorist safety.  Almost 50 officers have worked overtime in the last two months specifically for the 26 Weeks to Safer Streets Program.

Ann Arbor is creating a task force to look at pedestrian safety and access, but even before the group meets a change in the city's crosswalk law is expected.

Ann Arbor City Council took a pair of actions at their meeting last night with an eye towards pedestrian safety, but concerns remain about if they will do anything positive.

Of 22 fatal crashes in Washtenaw County in 2012, six of those fatalities were bikes and pedestrians.  Some say our speed limits are too fast, while others say they are too low.  In this month's installment of WEMU's "The Green Room", Reporter Barbara Lucas explores the controversies regarding speed limits.
