student debt

A state Senate panel will take up a bill on Tuesday that would allow college graduates to claim a tax credit based on student loan interest payments.

Supporters say skyrocketing student loan debt is causing recent grads to move out of Michigan.

Due to inaction on the part of the US Congress, student loan interest rates have doubled. Unless congress takes action upon returning from summer recess, those rates will stick for any student taking out a loan after July 1st of this year. As WEMU's Bob Eccles reports, eastern Michigan University officials hope congress will return loan rates to lower levels but, either way, will be there to provide counsel to students.
