On the heels of Monday night's community forum on opioid epidemic and related mental health and public safety issues at Saline High School, Congresswoman Debbie Dingell joined WEMU's David Fair to add to the conversation. The 12th district Democrat from Dearborn shared her family's addiction issues and discussed the need for a change in the social and legislative approach to garner more positive outcomes.

To address the opioid crisis in Washtenaw County, the Sheriff's Office, along with U.S. Congresswoman Debbie Dingell and U.S. Congressman Tim Walberg, hosted a forum on the issue.  It attracted over 200 people to Saline High School where it was held.

The opioid epidemic is nationwide and increasing in severity.  That includes Washtenaw County and the state of Michigan.  Washtenaw County Sheriff Jerry Clayton, Democratic Congresswoman Debbie Dingell, and Republican Representative Tim Walberg will host a community awareness forum on the issue in Saline tonight. 

Every Monday morning, the executive director of the CivCity Initiative joins WEMU's David Fair  for a conversation on topics pertinent to Washtenaw County and the city of Ann Arbor. Mary Morgan will provide news, analysis, commentary and explain the various ways residents can become more engaged.

The former mayor of Saline and two-term State Representative Gretchen Driskell formally announced Wednesday she is running for Congress again in 2018.  She's running for the 7th Congressional District seat against incumbent Tim Wahlberg.  89.1 WEMU'S Lisa Barry spoke to Driskell about her campaign announcement.

One of the most contested and most expensive congressional races in Michigan involved a former local mayor of Saline.


89.1 WEMU

It was light voter turnout for the primary elections in Washtenaw County. County elections director Ed Golembiewski had predicted 20-to-25% turnout among the more than 272,000 registered voters.  In the end, under 18% cast a ballot.

U.S. Representative Tim Walberg beat Douglas Radcliffe North in the 7th District GOP primary in southeastern Michigan. 

The election isn't until November of 2014, but Pam Byrnes is working to make in-roads with the 7th Congressional District constituency now.  The former Democratic State Representative is seeking to unseat incumbent Republican Tim Walberg.  

As WEMU's Bob Eccles reports, Byrnes yesterday wrapped up a three-day tour of the seven counties that comprise the 7th district.
